highs in the low 70s. right now foggy and 51. time for traffic. yeah, if you are leaving in the the next couple of hours, leave earlier. i promise you in many spots of the viewing region you won't be able to go the normal speed you are used to. traveling the dulles toll road, i went a good ten miles urn what i usually traveled. a lot of people with low beams on and it is like in the entire way from frederick to the spur. in to dc on river road you will have a couple of patches of clearing but low visible out here. so take your time. the beltway in maryland, it is going to be tough to see in spots here as well as evident here at colesville road. the live shot of the outer loop if you can see it on route 4, route 5 and 301. the same situation on all three of those roads and wrap it up with the beltway in virginia. bad, bad bad out here. watch your speed.

no incidents or accidents to report but low visibility is the big story this morning. back to you. maryland state board of elections is requesting an investigation of state senator ulysses curry of prince georges county. according to the baltimore sun, the influential senator is accused of using $41,000 in campaign funds to pay for apparent criminal defense legal fees over the last year. the board is not satisfied with how the campaign explained more than $53,000 in questionable expenditures. dc police need your help to catch two robbers. officers say two men walked in to nelly's sports bar in the 900 block of u street northwest on monday night. they say the manwaring the baseball caps pointed a weapon at the manager and demanded cash the pair then ran out the back with employees following them. if you have any information about this crime, call police. the army is considering whether to rescind an invitation to evangelist

franklin graham. graham son of billy graham was supposed to appear at the pentagon on may 6th, the national day of prayer but complaints about his description of islam as evil as the -- has the military questioning whether they should pull the invitation. the military freedom foundation says it would offend muslim employees at the pentagon and endanger troops by stirring up muslim extremists. president obama says it is very important his next supreme court nominee takes women's ' rights in to account in interpreting the constitution but he said the nominee will not have to past a litmus test on abortion. yesterday president obama and vice president biden met with top senate leaders to discuss the next nominee. the president plans to nominate someone by the end of may at the latest. the coast guard continues to look for 11 workers after their oil platform exploded. survivors are being reunited with their families this morning. more than 120 workers were

looking at 29 and route 123 in virginia. fog will be the factor this morning. we will have a look at the roads coming up. troubled coal producer massey energy says it expects to lose $150 million in the second quarter due to the explosion that killed 29 men. they predicted the loss on wednesday as it has lower first quarter earnings. international flights are taking off after stranded a week due to iceland's erupting volcano. it could be days or weeks before the backlog of flights are cleared around the world. airlines have lost close to $2

about how to increase opportunities for americans and sustain momentum. the smithsonian's national museum of american history received items from the kennedy era that have been in a receive deposit box for years. one item is a cane used by president kennedy during world war ii. robinson made the donations. he and jfk were both pt boat commanders in the south pacific. new york's presbyterian hospital columbia hosted an event to celebrate 3,000 kidney transplants there since the first one in 1969. some the result of kidney swapping. that's when a loved one who isn't a match for their loved one is a match for another. >> we increase the number of live donors by a third, which is huge. >> reporter: in december of 2009, surgeons here in the district performed 26 kidney swap surgeries saving 13 lives. there are 80,000 americans

welcome back to 9 news now. i'm andrea roane. thanks for joining us this morning. angie goff will have the traffic in just a moment. first here's howard with a foggy forecast. >> it is included eastern virginia. we are talking harrisburg down to danville almost and norfolk. go anywhere from there, including us and baltimore you are under the dense fog advisory. eastern shore still is not. we will watch that. look at the satellite and radar first and then to the dense fog

advisory. the rain from yesterday, a nice gentle rain but left low-level moisture. perfect combinations for forming fog and all the counties in yellow which is everybody except western maryland and shenandoah valley and the eastern shore. >> keep airlines on the ground. >> there will be flight delays with visibilities at dulles at zero at last check. same with gaithersburg and leesburg, martinsburg, hagerstown, a quarter mile and even at gnash we have been dropping to a mile and a quarter. a lot of fog. tappahannock , three quarters of a mile. some of the fog you will be driving and then hit blinding fog where the visibilities is 50 feet. keep that in mind. temperatures in the 40s to near 40 to actually near 50. some spots in the upper 30s before we rebound. looking at the day at a glance, early fog. a stray shower can't be ruled out but breezy and warmer with

close the agency's nearly $200 million budget gap. 9 news now reporter kristin fisher is live at the vienna fairfax station with more. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: good morning, andrea. for the most part the plan calls for some pretty substantial rate hikes which is what the majority of people that spoke out at public hearings last month were hoping for. the bad news here is there are some somewhat significant service cuts, especially on the weekends. check this out. our partners over at the washington examiner are reporting this proposed plan calls for closing the rail system at 2:00 a.m. instead of 3:00 a.m. on weekends with riders paying a flat $4 fare for all late- night service regardless of the trip length it would close four stationens entrances after 8 p.m. on weekday and 8 p.m. on the weekends.

richard sarles is asking to raise the rates 30 cents. and as much as $5 for the longest trips. bus fares would rise 25 cents from 1.25 to 1.50. visit tores and occasional riders, get this, they would have to pay even more. bus riders paying cash need to cough up an extra ten cents and rail riders would pay an extra 25 cents per transaction. this plan is not yet a done deal. of course, keep in mind, this is only a proposed plan. metro board still needs to vote on it and approve it and that should take place sometime next week. andrea, back to you. >> thank you. later today a beloved middle school principal will be buried in a private funeral in manassas, virginia. yesterday 2,000 mourners attended an emotional wake at the pierce funeral home. andrea mccarren has more.

>> instead of making us a school he made us a family and it's hard to know that the father of our family is gone. >> he wasn't just my principal but my best friend. he helped me be the person i am today. >> for some of us he was a father, a mentor, an important person. >> like a true father to me and i loved him dearly. >> reporter: the parents of pet bet and his sister greeted more than 2,000 mourners. among them this group of ninth graders who liked brian betts so much they did something extraordinary and lobbied the school system to stay at shaw middle school for another year as ninth graders. it was unprecedented. >> he understands everything about ninth graders he would know what we were going through in our life and we could call him anytime at night and he would listen no matter what. >> he wasn't like just a principal but a best friend. >> when we had problems he would find a way to help us.

this is fuzzy video in question. it shows events on knox road leading up to the alleged riot police beating of jack mckenna on march third. university police said they found it on tuesday and didn't give it to the lawyers first because they thought all the copies had been erased. >> the 90 minute gap is we believe a technicians era when it was transmitted and complied with the subpoena. >> of the 15 or so cameras we received it was the most important camera that was omitted. they say it is a mistake it but it is a coincidence that raises enough questions that one would hope it is thoroughly investigated. >> reporter: the police officer in charge of video surveillance the night of the beating happens to be married to one of the mounted officers at the scene of that beating. university officials say she recaused herself from handling video once the lures subpoenaed the tape. as for the video released yesterday, it doesn't show the

beating but the circumstances of how it disappeared and then was found are the subject 0 a state police investigation. an accokeek, maryland family says a teachers aide from oxon hill middle school beat their mentally challenged child. the family spokesperson says the teenager has the mental capacity of a 6-year-old. she says the alleged incident happened april 6th inside the gym. she says a man grabbed a basketball an threw it at the face of the teenager. >> he then picked the child up. threw him in to the bleachers. as the child attempted to get up, the assaulting teacher grabbed him once again and threw him back in to the bleachers for a second time. >> reporter: no word yet if the accused teachers aides faced disciplinary action but the school sent out a letter a week after the alleged incident notifying parents the school's principal had stepped down. the letter did not make accusations of a student being

welcome back. we are looking at 0 westbound where we have a dense fog advisory going on. it will be a tough ride as far as visibility is concern all the way to the beltway. your complete traffic is coming up. in the news now at 5:39, six people are dead and another five are hurt after a collision of military helicopters in columbia. it happened as the choppers were attempting to take off from the military base. with part of an offensive against a military group in the area, a general and five soldiers are among the dead. the coast guard says at least 11 people are missing after an explosion and fire at an oil drilling platform off the louisiana coast. a boat carrying 100 survivors from the platform blast has arrived on shore. the survivors were reunited with their families this morning. seven of them were hurt. the search continues for the missing workers. two workers in south florida are safe after hanging by their safety harnesses when their scaffolding collapsed at a high-rise building on

denver police have released shopping mall surveillance video hoping it generates leads to two men who stole a shoppers ipad and tore off part of his pinger in the process. bill jordan was attacked as he was leave the mall. two men followed him and one grabbed for the ipad shopping bag.

michigan on the land that bears her family name, lynn and her husband were living their dream. >> i love farming. farming is our way of life. >> reporter: in the ' 90s her way of life came urn assault. within ten miles of her home a dozen factory farms sprung up. places where tens of thousands of animals are raised barely able to move. >> i refer to them as animal factories because the animals are nothing more than machines. they don't get to see the you door their entire life. >> reporter: thousands of gallons of waste from the factory farms is channeled in to open pits where the toxic brew of feces, urine, antibiotics, pesticides, blood and bacteria is left to ferment before it is stray sprayed out on farm fieldings. henning says the stench is fatherly unbearable. the toxic gases like ammonia, methane, carbon monoxide and
